Tinkering with Data: Engaging Data Explorations with TinkerPlots
Jul 20, 2012 8 AM CST - 9AM CSTJoin Key's own, Karen Greenhaus, as she presents in Room 342BE in the George R. Brown Convention Center, at the Conference for Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT) in Houston, TX.
This technology workshop lets you tinker with real-world data. Use TinkerPlots® to explore data, generate your own questions, make conjectures, and carry out investigations. See how students can manipulate data to generate a variety of statistical graphs, discover patterns, and make connections.
DY-NO-MITE...Dynamic Geometry
Jul 19, 2012 9:15 AM CST to 10:15 AM CSTTired of drawing diagrams on your board and saying you didn't take an art class to be a geometry teacher? Then this session is for you. Learn how you can use dynamic geometry, through The Geometer's Sketchpad® to make your lessons come alive. Also see how the iPad® application, Sketchpad Explorer, can be used by you and your students. We will focus on triangle centers and discuss other topics as well.
Join presenter Nadine Herbst, as she leads this session in Room 372BE in the George R. Brown Convention Center, at the Conference for Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT) in Houston, TX.
Beliefs and Achievement: Geometric Thinking in Action
Jul 19, 2012 11:45 AM CST to 12:45 PM CSTFor years, mathematics educators have considered the extent to which students' beliefs about mathematics in general, and more specifically beliefs about geometry, influence how students develop geometric thinking. In a project conducted with high school students in central Texas, investigators found that (a) students had varied beliefs about the nature of geometry and geometric thinking, and (b) such beliefs influenced how students thought about conjecture and proof. Videos of students performing geometric tasks using dynamic geometry software (Sketchpad®) will be discussed as well as strategies teachers used to enhance students' geometric thinking.
